Employment & Training Opportunities
Metro recognizes the need for training and employment opportunities within its community and strives wherever possible to provide these for Aboriginal people. This goal is part of Metro’s 5-Year Business Plan.
The high volume of Aboriginal cultural heritage work allows Metro to contract experienced and trained Aboriginal Land & Conservation Officers to carry out works under Metro’s supervision. In this way Metro provides employment and training opportunities for its members at the same time as strengthening the site maintenance programs.
Metro provides casual employment opportunities to its members on a regular basis in varying positions. If a full-time employee takes leave of their position or when extra assistance is needed Metro will, wherever possible, employ from its membership base.
Providing work experience opportunities for local schools is another way Metro works towards providing career opportunities for Aboriginal people. Metro has an agreement with the Australian Training Company to provide placements for students wishing to do training in their final years of school as part of their curriculum.
In 2004 Metro worked with NSW TAFE to develop a Land and Conservation Management course specifically for Aboriginal people. In 2005 the first intake of the program was successful with eight Land and Conservation Trainees completing the course in its first year. Many of the Trainees went on to employment within the land and conservation management industry.
