Funding
Metro seek funding from various bodies, groups and individuals to run programs that meet the needs of the Aboriginal community within our boundaries. Metro is a Public Benevolent Institution and donations or contributions made to Metro may be declared as a taxable benefit.
Although Metro owns land, it is currently asset rich and income poor. Our large membership base, the pressing needs of the community and the restrictive nature of the Aboriginal Land Rights Act in terms of allocating monies, means Metro must seek outside funding to run programs that address our community’s needs.
The social needs of the community vary greatly, and Metro runs programs for Aboriginal youth, elders, families, cultural education and many other areas. Some of the successful programs run by Metro include:
Blackout Violence
An award winning campaign to combat family violence within Aboriginal communities
Saturday Family Day Outings
Aimed at healthy lifestyle choices for Aboriginal families;
Annual Cultural Gathering
For members and their families to encourage coming together as a community and celebrating Aboriginal culture;
Sydney to Bourke Cultural Program
Aimed at male Aboriginal youth living in inner city Sydney wanting to experience the bush lifestyle;
Nowra Elders Trip
Taking Aboriginal elders from the Sydney region to the country;
Kinchela Boys Tour
Helped a number of the Stolen Generations elders to visit the country they were taken from as children.
