Housing
A function of Land Councils under the New South Wales Aboriginal Land Rights Act is to provide housing for Aboriginal people in their area. The aim of Metro’s Property Unit is to help equip our members with suitable and affordable housing, clean water, heating and decent living conditions for themselves and their families.

Metro currently houses over 27 tenants in the Sydney Metropolitan area. We are striving to grow our housing base through future developments. For Metro’s members the provision of suitable and affordable housing is the number one need.

The Property Unit is responsible for the management and maintenance of Metro residential and business properties. Our Housing Officer looks after all of Metro’s houses and properties ensuring they are kept in the best condition, protecting the assets of Metro and giving our members and their families a decent standard of living.

Metro is currently working on a Home Ownership Scheme to provide long term generational benefits to its members. Metro has investigated and developed possible future options for the Scheme and is awaiting amendments to the Land Rights Act so that it can put these in place. Home Ownership is crucial to the self-determination of Aboriginal people. By providing the option of Home Ownership to its members, Metro will be able to provide an opportunity never before available to many Aboriginal families.
